Rick Cunningham, MD

Dr. Cunningham joined Vail • Summit Orthopaedics in the summer of 2003 because of his desire to practice in a small mountain community where he can provide great orthopedic care to patients who are also friends and neighbors. He was attracted to Vail • Summit Orthopaedics because of the team of orthopedists making up the practice who share a common philosophy of true concern for the health and well being of those in our mountain community.

Dr. Cunningham was trained at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, regarded as the country's leader in sports medicine research. He brings a wealth of expertise in the latest surgical techniques for treating sports injuries including break-through technologies in cartilage restoration. Dr. Cunningham is excited about working with people who live life to the fullest and enjoy all that the natural environment has to offer because of their strong motivation to get better and back into the action!

It is no surprise that Dr. Cunningham decided to be a sports medicine orthopedist. Sports have always played a big part in his life. His grandparents opened a ski shop in upstate New York when skiing was in its infancy and the business has since grown to include several ski shops and a river rafting company. He has fond childhood memories of being packed into the station wagon for a weekend of ski racing. Rick skied competitively through college and now enjoys the sport with family and friends every chance he gets. Running and cycling provide a sports outlet for Rick in warmer months.

Rick and his wife, Diane, are making their new home in Edwards with their four young children.
