The Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Athletic Training Fellowship is founded and supported through fellowship- and residency-trained orthopaedic surgeons providing care to one of the nation’s most athletic areas including professional and local athletes, the US Ski Team, and destination athletes from all ages and sports levels. Vail-Summit Orthopaedics currently employs eight fellowship-trained athletic trainers. These athletic trainers are critical to the orthopaedic physicians at Vail-Summit Orthopaedics in providing exceptional care to their athletes.

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics hosts a 1-year athletic training fellowship for certified athletic trainers. This post-graduate level fellowship program is a stipend-based educational program for the certified athletic trainer and is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills in the clinical orthopaedic setting. AT fellows will be educated directly by world-class orthopaedic physicians and their knowledgeable staff. Educational areas include clinic, durable medical equipment, operating room, physical therapy, sports outreach, and research through the Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation.

The Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Athletic Training Fellowship program accepts two certified athletic trainers into the program with the goal to prepare the certified AT fellows with the experience and advanced knowledge, including diagnostic and evaluation skills, for a role in the orthopaedic/sports medicine clinical setting.  AT fellows will rotate with all Vail-Summit Orthopaedics physicians and specialties, including ankle, back, elbow, foot, hand, hip, joint revision and replacement, knee, neck, neurosurgery, orthopaedic trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation, shoulder, spine, sports medicine, and wrist.  AT fellows also attend regularly scheduled academic sessions and have research objectives through the Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation and sports outreach assignments.

The Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Athletic Training Fellowship program is unique in that it is one of the few programs in the country that has a neurosurgery department and a staff neurosurgeon directing a concussion management program.

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics is an Approved BOC Provider for athletic trainers. The fellowship curriculum is based on the six CAATE standards including advanced post-professional education aligned with the five practice domains of athletic training.
