Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery Expands Into Gunnison, San Miguel, Adds First Female Surgeon

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery is acquiring the Gunnison County-based organization, Alpine Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, with locations in Gunnison, Crested Butte, and Telluride, CO. VSON will also become the majority owner of Alpine Surgery Center, located in Gunnison, CO.

Established in 1999, Alpine Orthopaedics is currently owned and operated by renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Gloria Beim. Beim founded Alpine Surgery Center seven years later, in 2006, and has remained its sole owner.

Alpine Orthopaedics will operate under the new name VSON Alpine as a result of the acquisition, while Alpine Surgery Center will continue to operate under the same name. The deal is slated to close on September 1, 2021.

Dr. Beim and her Physician Assistants, Amy Sandusky and Julia Stock, will remain providers in VSON Alpine locations, along with new provider, Dr. Adam Lindsay.

“The physicians at Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery are some of the best sports medicine docs in the country – many of whom I have worked and consulted with over the years. I am thrilled to be joining such a talented and reputable team,” said Dr. Beim of the transition.

Dr. Gloria Beim is a decorated orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, who will become VSON’s newest partner and the organization’s first female surgeon. Dr. Beim entered college at age 14, received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, completed her residency at Columbia/New York Orthopaedic Hospital, and then became the first woman ever accepted into renowned sports medicine pioneer, Dr. Freddie Fu’s fellowship training program at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Beim has been working with professional teams and providing medical direction at elite athletic events for the past 25 years, including serving as Head Team Physician at Olympic and Paralympic events around the world since 2002. At present, she is serving as Chief Medical Officer for Team USA at the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo.

“We look forward to welcoming Dr. Beim to VSON,” said CEO John Polikandriotis. “Dr. Beim is a very accomplished and talented surgeon. She will be an incredible addition to our team.”

To meet future needs of orthopaedic and spinal care, and influenced by local and national trends in health care, the medical groups are partnering to share invaluable resources – including people, space, and technology – to produce cost-effective, convenient, and complete care for our communities.

By expanding into new mountain territories, VSON is able to grow the scope and quality of its services, research, and outreach, thus providing better overall care to patients at each location, and a more competitive option for orthopaedics and neurosurgery in Colorado.

In the Gunnison Valley, this partnership will also allow patients access to previously unavailable expertise in the subspecialty areas of hip, joint replacement, foot/ankle, and operative and non-operative spine. Research, development, and innovative surgical and recovery techniques will also be leveraged through VSON’s non-profit organization, VSON Research & Education Foundation.

The longest-standing orthopaedic practice in the Vail Valley, VSON has an established record of success. With existing clinics in Edwards, Vail, Frisco, and Granby, the group was already one of Colorado’s leading providers of orthopaedic services. With its acquisition of Alpine Orthopaedics and further expansion to the Western Slope, VSON has become the premier orthopaedic group dedicated to serving mountain communities.
