At Vail-Summit Orthopaedics, we are dedicated to offering the latest and most advanced treatments and procedures. That’s why we offer stem cell injections, also known as bone marrow concentrate therapy, for arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other orthopaedic conditions, injuries, and diseases.
Traditional orthopaedic treatments involve removing or replacing damaged or injured tissue, but now, with stem cell therapy, there is an opportunity to augment the body’s own natural healing abilities to repair and heal damaged tissue by itself using stem cells.
Everyone has stem cells, and as such, these cells have a unique ability to differentiate into specialized types of cells. In doing so, these cells become responsible for healing injured bones, ligaments, tendons, and tissues; however, as the body ages or is injured, it is unable to get an adequate supply of these cells into the areas in need. This is why stem cell therapy and injections can be helpful in aiding your body's own natural ability to heal.
Patients who undergo these injections experience quicker recoveries and restored strength and mobility than those who undergo traditional surgical procedures, and these patients do not have to complete the rehabilitation that is required post-surgery.
Because stem cells are concentrated from your own bone marrow and blood components, stem cell injection therapy is considered safe and has a greatly minimized risk of infection or inadvertent reaction. Stem cell therapy has been highly researched and has proved to be a very safe and effective nonsurgical treatment method.
What is a stem cell, and how does stem cell therapy work?
Stem cells come in two forms, adult and embryonic. The form that is used for stem cell injections is referred to as adult stem cells. These adult stem cells are found in your bone marrow and are able to become several different kinds of cells, such as bone, muscle, tendon, and blood cells.
During a stem cell injection procedure, the stem cells are extracted from your own bone marrow and are then concentrated in a machine and injected into the treatment site to be accurately reintroduced to the precise area of damage for optimal results. Once injected, the stem cells may help to heal your injury or condition.
Ultimately, this therapy process will deliver a much higher volume of stem cells to the damaged site than your body can or will produce on its own, thereby regenerating tissue that may further degenerate without intervention.
Stem cell therapy can be used to treat many injuries, conditions, and sources of pain in patients through injections, including:
- ACL sprains and tears
- Articular cartilage injuries
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Degenerative disc disease
- Degenerative joint disease
- Herniated discs
- Labral tears
- Partial rotator cuff tears
- Pinched nerves
- Trigger fingers
This medical treatment or therapy can be done in an outpatient setting and will usually take less than an hour. Currently, our physiatrist and stem cell injection expert, Dr. Scott Raub, is performing this treatment at our Vail-Summit Orthopaedic locations in Edwards, Frisco, and Vail.
