Important Update Regarding Cigna Insurance Coverage

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery would like to provide an important update regarding our participation with Cigna.

As of July 1, 2026, Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery is no longer participating in the Cigna provider network.

This change follows Cigna's decision to terminate its agreement with the local Independent Practice Association (IPA), requiring participating providers to negotiate directly with Cigna. Despite engaging in good-faith negotiations in an effort to establish a new agreement that preserved patient access to local specialty care, we were unable to reach an agreement before Cigna's deadline.

While this outcome is disappointing, our commitment to our patients and community remains unchanged. We continue to negotiate in good faith with Cigna in hopes of reaching a future agreement that restores in-network access to our physicians.

For more than three decades, Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery has been committed to serving Eagle and Summit counties, and the surrounding mountain communities. Throughout this process, our priority has remained ensuring that patients have timely access to orthopedic and neurosurgical care close to home. We believe patients should not be forced to travel outside the region or experience unnecessary delays in care because of insurance contract disputes.

Continuity of Care (Transition of Care)

As we continue supporting patients through this transition, we have received additional clarification from Cigna regarding the Continuity of Care (Transition of Care) request process.

Continuity of Care may allow eligible patients to continue receiving care from their current Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery provider at in-network benefit levels for a limited period of time. Eligibility and approval are determined solely by Cigna.

To help simplify the process, we have created a Continuity of Care Quick Reference Guide, which includes:

  • Information you may need to complete the Continuity of Care request form

  • VSON provider and office information

  • Helpful tips for completing and submitting your request

  • An overview of how VSON will support you throughout the process

Cigna has confirmed that patients are responsible for completing and signing the Continuity of Care request form.

VSON is happy to assist by providing the practice and provider information needed to complete your request and, if you would like, we can fax your completed form to Cigna as a courtesy. If Cigna requests medical records or additional clinical documentation, our team will respond promptly.

If you previously provided VSON with a blank or partially completed Continuity of Care request form, please complete and sign the form using the information in the Quick Reference Guide. Once completed, you may submit it directly to Cigna or return it to our office if you would like us to fax it on your behalf.

Please remember that Cigna determines whether you qualify for Continuity of Care and whether your request is approved. Questions regarding eligibility, insurance benefits, claim status, approval decisions, or financial responsibility should be directed to Cigna.

Your Voice Matters

If you are a Cigna member and want to preserve in-network access to Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery in the future, we encourage you to contact Cigna using the phone number on the back of your insurance card. Let Cigna know that continued access to local orthopedic and neurosurgical specialists is important to you and your family.

You may also wish to speak with your employer's Human Resources or benefits manager. Employers often have direct relationships with health plans and may be able to communicate employee concerns to Cigna or evaluate additional health plan options that better support local access to care.

We understand that insurance changes can create uncertainty, and we appreciate the trust you place in our team. We remain committed to supporting our patients throughout this transition, providing assistance whenever possible, and sharing updates as additional information becomes available.

Thank you for allowing Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery to participate in your care.

Sincerely,

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery
