Important Update Regarding Cigna Insurance Coverage

Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery would like to inform our patients and community of an ongoing contract negotiation with Cigna.

Cigna recently terminated its agreement with the local Independent Practice Association (IPA), requiring participating providers to negotiate directly with Cigna. Since that time, we have been engaged in good-faith discussions with Cigna in an effort to establish a new agreement that preserves patient access to high-quality orthopedic and neurosurgical care throughout our region.

At this time, we have not reached an agreement before Cigna’s stated deadline, and our current participation status is scheduled to terminate effective July 1, 2026.

While this development is disappointing, our commitment to our patients and community remains unchanged. We will continue to negotiate in good faith with Cigna in hopes of reaching an agreement that supports continued local access to specialty orthopedic and neurosurgical care.

Our primary concern throughout this process has been ensuring that patients in Eagle, Summit, and surrounding mountain communities have timely access to the care they need close to home. We believe patients should not be forced to travel outside the region or experience delays in care due to contract disputes. Maintaining access to local physicians, imaging, procedures, surgery, and follow-up care has been at the center of our discussions with Cigna.

Your voice matters.

  • If you are a Cigna member and want to preserve in-network access to Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, we encourage you to contact Cigna directly using the number on the back of your health insurance card. Let Cigna know that continued in-network access to local orthopedic and neurosurgical specialists is important to you and your family.

  • You may also wish to speak with your employer’s HR or benefits manager. Employers often have direct relationships with health plans and may be able to raise concerns with Cigna or evaluate additional health plan options that better protect local in-network access to our providers.

We understand that insurance changes can create uncertainty and concern. Our team is actively evaluating options and will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available. We encourage patients with questions regarding their specific insurance coverage to contact our office, where we will do our best to assist them and discuss available options.

For more than three decades, Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery has been committed to serving the Eagle and Summit County communities. That commitment remains unchanged, and we will continue advocating for our patients, our community, and the preservation of high-quality local access to care.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and trust as we work through this process.

Sincerely,
Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery
