Spine and Back
Conditions

The spine is a highly complex and crucial structure in the human body, composed of muscles, bones (or vertebrae), tendons, ligaments, and sensitive nerves. The spine protects the spinal cord while providing support, strength, and flexibility. However, that ability to offer support and flexibility simultaneously puts the spine at an increased risk for injury.

Due to its unique structure and its proximity to the spinal cord, injuries of the spine can affect any appendage of the human body. For this reason, an accurate diagnosis made by a spine specialist is a crucial prerequisite to determining a course of treatment.

When Should I Consult a Spine and Back Specialist?

Causes of spine conditions are wide-ranging and abundant, as they can affect the bones, nerves, muscles, or tendons. Additionally, many spine conditions worsen over time, often exacerbating pain and causing further damage. Therefore, it is imperative to seek immediate treatment with a spine specialist if you suspect you are suffering from a spine condition or injury.

You may be suffering from a spine condition or injury if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Radiating pain from the neck to the arm/hand Radiating pain from the back to the leg/foot

  • Back, leg, or foot pain that worsens while standing or walking and is relieved by sitting

  • Nagging pain after episodes of heavy lifting, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs

  •  Nerve or dexterity problems in the arms and hands

  • Numbness or tingling in one or both legs

  • Weakness localized to a specific area of the leg or arm

The spine doctor at Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery understands that damage to the spinal cord is not only extremely painful but also potentially devastating, as it often restricts mobility and significantly reduces your quality of life. Our spine physicians will work with you to accurately diagnose your condition and develop a treatment plan that gets you back to the activities you love.

Dr. Braxton and his team provided extraordinary care for me. From scheduling me in at the last minute and surgery the following day, the experience could not have been better. I had a microdiscectomy L4-L5 and was awake during the procedure, which allowed me to communicate with Dr. Braxton. This was a big help as there were some other issues that did not present on the MRI. The team makes you feel like you are the most important patient they have, and being at the Vail Surgery Center provides a very nice sense of calm. Several people, including doctors, recommended Dr. Braxton as being "the guy" you want to see. I can see why. I had instant relief post-surgery, like a switch was turned on. I would put Dr. Braxton and Team at the top of your list if you are considering any kind of back surgery.

Common Spine and Back Conditions

Wide Awake Spine Surgery

Wide-awake spine surgery is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure offered by Dr. Ernest Braxton at Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery. The patient is awake, alert, and comfortable during the procedure and treated with localized pain blockers. This allows Dr. Braxton to examine his neurosurgical patients in real-time, avoids the need for after-surgery pain narcotics, and offers fast recovery times. The main benefit of wide-awake spine surgery is that Dr. Braxton can monitor the patient's neurological progress during the procedure, helping him more accurately and efficiently locate and treat the pathology.
