Understanding Common Orthopedic Injuries

Certain sports have a tendency to produce a particular kind of injury. For example, sports like tennis, soccer and skiing involve cutting and pivoting actions with the legs that make the knee vulnerable to injury; ligament tears (ACL, MCL, LCL and patellar tendon) and cartilage tears (meniscus and articular cartilage) are typical.

Snowboarding tends to produce ankle, shoulder, wrist and hand injuries, from mild strains, sprains and dislocations to fractures. Golf can impact the ankle, elbow, spine, knee and hip. Of course, any sport, particularly when speed or heights are involved, can result in orthopedic trauma.

Wear and Tear Can Cause Common Orthopaedic Injuries

Many orthopedic injuries are the result of “wear and tear” from repetitive stress (overuse) or from the body’s natural aging process, such as degenerative diseases of the spine. Any joint in the body can be affected by degeneration. Chronic joint pain often results from worn cartilage, inflamed tendons (tendonitis) or inflamed connective tissue (fasciitis).

Understand Your Options

The most common complaints respond to non-surgical treatment. Fully understanding your options is a process of discovery and education.

In our procedure visualization section, you can gather basic information on common conditions, as well as descriptions of potential treatments.
